Ha Jung-woo once again stands on the brink of ruin after making the wrong choice. Even when faced with a chance to turn things around, he chose a different path, pushing the situation deeper into catastrophe.
In Episode 9 of Mad Concrete Dreams, aired on April 11, Ki Soo-jong (Ha Jung-woo) and Kim Sun (Im Soo-jung) attempted to escape their crisis with a staged murder scenario. However, unforeseen variables shattered their plan, driving the episode into a high-tension spiral.
While trying to rescue his daughter, Ki Soo-jong was simultaneously cornered by another looming threat. The truth he had concealed from Jeon Yi-kyung (Krystal Jung) was on the verge of exposure. Despite being the one who orchestrated Yi-kyung’s past kidnapping with Min Hwal-seong, he had already shifted all responsibility onto Kim Sun. Confronted with the truth, Kim Sun ultimately fell to her knees, and the situation rapidly unraveled.
Anger soon turned into conditions. Yi-kyung demanded a complete collapse of their lives: surrender to authorities, forfeiture of all assets, and even a recorded confession. While Kim Sun appeared resigned, Ki Soo-jong resisted until the end, searching for another way out.
He framed his decision as one for his family. Claiming, “This was for my family,” he persuaded Kim Sun, while pleading with Yi-kyung to at least leave him Seyoon Building as a minimal means of survival. At the same time, he proposed a plan to take full responsibility by eliminating Min Hwal-seong and going to prison.
Yet this resolve concealed another calculation. Recalling Kim Sun’s earlier remark about medical techniques that could simulate death and revive a person, he devised a dangerous scheme. The plan was to stage Min Hwal-seong’s death as a fall, deceive the watcher Dong-chul (Lee Ban-seok), and finalize the contract.
They had just four minutes.
Everything had to be executed within that window. But the plan collapsed from the outset. Ki Soo-jong failed to properly use the stun device he had prepared and was instead overpowered by Dong-chul. Control shifted instantly, leaving Kim Sun alone to handle the aftermath.
As seconds ticked away, tension peaked. The alarm signaled the approaching deadline, and Yi-kyung erupted in fury at the unfolding chaos. When Min Hwal-seong appeared to be dead, the shock intensified. With everything falling apart, the question of whether Kim Sun could reverse the situation drove the episode to its climax.
The episode also revealed Ki Soo-jong’s past, adding depth to his choices. Once an HR employee at a major corporation, he abandoned stability to pursue risk for the sake of his hearing-impaired daughter’s future. Seeking to escape the instability of corporate life, he chose the path of becoming a building owner.
But from the beginning, things went wrong. When Min Hwal-seong suddenly withdrew from their joint investment, Ki Soo-jong faced losing his deposit. In desperation, he gathered his severance pay and loans to push through the deal alone, a decision that marked the starting point of the tragedy.
In a chain where one choice leads to another, and each decision deepens the crisis, Ki Soo-jong is being pushed toward an irreversible point. The irony that his struggle for salvation accelerates his downfall continues to drive the drama’s tension.
Meanwhile, Episode 10 of Mad Concrete Dreams will air on April 12.
